Novel ways to Earn Extra Income

Sometimes it pays to think outside the box if you want to earn extra income. Here’s just a selection of ways in which people have successfully managed to earn extra income.

  •  Private tutoring – private tutoring is unregulated, so anyone can set up as a tutor. If you have a particular talent eg playing a musical instrument, or can speak a foreign language fluently or are an excellent cook, you could earn up to £30 an hour by offering your services as a tutor. You will of course need to have excellent people skills, patience and an even temper.
  • Rent your garage or driveway – advertise your parking area in local papers or websites such as www.gumtree.com. If you live in an area that is full of parking meters and restricted parking zones, there will be plenty of takers and you don’t have to do any work in order to get an extra income.
  • Rent your spare room – check out the going rate on a reputable house share website before advertising your spare room. You should also ensure that you are not breaking your mortgage agreement by taking on a tenant, and don’t forget to check your home and contents insurance policy too.
  • Make your hobby pay – if you have a hobby that you love doing then there’s not many better ways of making some extra cash. Perhaps you enjoy making jewellery to give as gifts to friends and family – there’s no reason why people might not be prepared to actually buy those same pieces. And who knows, it could turn into a much bigger source of extra income than you anticipated.
  • Be a dog walker – if you like dogs, enjoy being outside and want to keep fit at the same time, this is the job for you. Advertise in local shop windows (a veterinary practice would be the ideal location for your ad!) and local papers – it’s a fun way to get some extra income.
